This method is known as ‘studying to memorize’ and may lead to lesser scores in the exam. If you can answer all these questions for any of the topic you have to study, it will be easy to understand, revise, and recall.
- What happened?
- Who was involved?
- When did it happen?
- Where did it happen?
- Why did it happen?
- How did it happen?
It is one of the best-recommended technique to understand the details of what you have read. Looking for answers of these 5Ws and 1H questions- what, who, why, where, when, and how helps to understand the concept from the base and recall easily later on.
These questions are often called journalistic questions, which helps to sketch a news authentically.
Ask these questions yourself and learn to know the detailed answers and draw connections between them.
Let’s start here by taking a topic as an example for SSC Board Students.
Example 1: Structure of a Cell:
- Identify the inventor/discoverer-
- Identify the definition/actions/list the characteristics-
- Try to connect them with the discoverer-
A cell is the structural and functional unit of a living being.
- Identify the discovery date and related stories-
Connect with the year 1665, cell theory, statement, definition, and, etc.
- Identify the cell’s presence. Draw a connecting link between them-
The cell is present in all living beings. It could be unicellular or multicellular. When unicellular, takes up the function of all life activities. When multicellular, they get specialized for performing varied functions.
- Identify the functional aspects, varied forms, types of cells, and, etc.
For instance, nerve cells for coordination, hepatic cells for secretion, muscle cells for posture and movement, and so forth.
- Identify the underlying principle behind the cell, chemical structure, cell organelles, and its presence, and, etc.
Know the physical processes and the biochemical reactions that take place inside the cell. For instance, phagocytosis, semi-permeability, osmosis, and, etc.

Whenever you take a topic, try to know the full history, connect them with the available data, make a chain of points, understand them, and, study them.
